"Fear is not how I speak to you."
This message took hold of my heart this past weekend at World Mandate. Wow. Can you imagine, the God of the universe, so vast, so immense, does not use fear to talk to us? How counter culture is that! Humans living in fear, being controlled by fear, have marked history. And even today, I feared failing a test, and stressed about not getting the job that I need to get when I graduate. But, God does not use fear to relate to us.
When I think of the two biggest emotions that mark my life, I think of fear and love. 1 John 4: 18 says “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear.” I’ve heard this verse over and over again but never felt the weight of those words. There is no fear in God; in fact, He casts out fear. I do not need to be afraid of the future because my life is marked by love. I mean, yes, it is still important to do your best in where you’ve been placed; but it is not okay to let fear of failure control you!
How different would my days be lived, my hours be spent, if I took this realization to heart? That because I have Jesus in my heart and because I have been called adopted as a child of God, I can walk in perfect love.
“For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons [or daughters], by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’“ – Romans 8:15
